About Our Facility

All of the Canis Major and Newfoundland Dog Treat products are manufactured locally in Newfoundland and Labrador using only the highest quality local source material. All of our products are 100% beef and are processed without the use of additives, preservatives, or any other ingredients. 

At Canis Major, we strive to ensure that our customers get the highest quality products which are made in our human grade processing facility. 

Our Facility: 

Before being operated as a facility for the manufacturing of pet food, our facility was a fish plant. This facility possessed a "ready to eat" designation from CFIA and was also Kosher certified. Both designations are the hardest to attain in the processing sector. The quality which was reflected in these designations still remain as we manufacture food for your furry family members. 

Our Processes: 

Our production team strives to ensure that Canis Major follows all of the CFIA regulations for "human food". Canis Major has implemented Standard Operating Procedures (SOPS), Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCPS), Quality Assurance Processes, Sanitation Plans, Recall Plans which ensures that every possible precaution is taken to ensure a high quality product. 

In terms of what this means on a day to day basis, it means that we have the foot operated hand wash station, that all utensils and surfaces are washed in between each stage of processing, that regular hand washing occurs in between each stage and at minimum time requirements, that proper personal sanitation equipment is used (gloves, hair restraints, clothing and aprons).

This also means that the plant is kept within a specific temperature range, that the refrigeration unit is kept within a specific temperature range (-30 C) and that the dehydrator is kept at a specific temperature range when in use.

This also means that the products (when out of the cold storage for processing) are only out for a maximum amount of time (depends on the product and materials). This also means that each stage of processing occurs at a different part of the plant.

Source Material:

Canis Major only use cows which are healthy and tested regularly. We purchase them from local supplies. Supporting Canis Major means that you are supporting only local businesses.  We do not use cows which are diseased, have had recent injections, or have any other health problems. Many of our local supplies have been awarded accolades by their peers and the government.

Canis Major uses the full animal for its products (except for SRM). This means that the high quality cuts of meat (ie tenderloin, t-bones, strip loin, prime rib) are all being fed to your dog. Unlike some other raw dog food companies, our patties are not made from the trimmings or meat rejected from human products.

What about Raw Meat?

As our raw products are raw meat, we encourage our customers to ensure they handle the product appropriately at home. Just like you would clean your counter after handling raw human food, you should clean up after raw dog food.
